Sociology

Program Overview
Sociologists study how people organize themselves to meet basic societal and individual needs. While sociology is primarily an academic discipline, the knowledge developed by sociologists is used in a wide range of occupations, including the ministry, counseling, communication, business, social work, demography, gerontology, urban and regional planning and criminal justice. Because sociology is one of the fundamental behavioral sciences, it provides an excellent foundation of knowledge for graduate study in most areas where the understanding of human behavior is a basic requirement.

Curriculum
The sociology curriculum at the University of Evansville is comprehensive and designed to prepare students for careers and graduate study. You may choose from five concentrations within sociology. The concentrations will be noted on your college transcript. For instance, if you are concentrating in Anthropology, your transcript will read "Sociology/Anthropology".

Internships
Internships are offered in a wide range of social service and public safety agencies. Internships are usually offered during the junior and senior years.

Sound Foundation for Graduate School
While we emphasize preparing students for direct entry into the job market, many of our graduates attend graduate school, so our curriculum also emphasizes giving students a strong foundation for graduate study.

Volunteer experience

Freshman and sophomore majors volunteer in area agencies. Through this opportunity they become familiar with different types of agencies and establish relationships in the community.

Writing and computer skills
These are absolutely essential skills for a successful career and developing them is an integral part of our courses.

Strong Research Component
Seniors are required to complete an original research study. Majors regularly present the findings of their research at regional and national undergraduate conferences. Several have co-authored professional articles.
