DR. ROBERT DION was in Indianapolis on September 12 to be filmed for an upcoming broadcast of the news program, NOW, that appears on PBS stations across the country.  He was interviewed by Senior Correspondent Maria Hinojosa, an Emmy Award-winning journalist who formerly worked for NPR and CNN.  The broadcast, which will probably air on Friday, September 29, will examine the influence of the controversy over the immigration issue on party politics in Indiana and nationwide as well as the effects this issue might have on the outcome of the upcoming midterm elections.

DR. GRAY WILL OFFER A NEW CRIMINAL JUSTICE course that provides an overview and exploration of the study of ethics as they relate to the Criminal Justice System. The course begins with a broader approach and examination of general ethics and morality and then applies ethical principles to issues of crime and justice. Specific attention is paid to issues surrounding law enforcement, the law and courts, and corrections – especially issues surrounding the punishment of criminals. The goal of the course is to challenge students to critically examine the issues involved in the administration of justice and consider all sides of ethical dilemmas that are regularly presented in practice of law and justice.

UE Law, Politics and Society e-Letter - April 14, 2004 Volume 3 Number 9

Dr. Gibbons is presenting a paper on the social construction of masculinity at the annual meetings of the Midwest Sociological Society later this month.  While most masculinity research focuses on how individual men understand and express their masculinity, Dr. Gibbons' research seeks to understand how men are judged in society.  Dr. Gibbons' survey asks young men and women what masculine qualities they look for in various settings.  Future research will survey different age groups.

Dr. Robert Dion was able to attend a spirited rally for Senator John Kerry in Tampa over his Spring Break.  He got there extra early and staked out a position very close to the stage.  According to Dr. Dion, the fact that he attended a campaign event even while he was on vacation proves once and for all that he is a complete political nerd.

Ron Christian, General Counsel for Vectren Corp., was the featured speaker for the Igleheart Lecture on Tuesday, March 16.  His topic was “The importance of Ethics and Corporate Governance to Business in America.”  The lecture was made possible by a grant from the Igleheart family.

Some of you may have heard a rumor that Dr. Scott will be leaving the criminal justice program after the coming academic year. Unfortunately, the rumor is true. We plan to begin looking for a replacement for Dr. Scott during the fall semester. In the meantime, we look forward to working with Dr. Scott in the coming year. Dr. Scott adds that he will stay in touch in case students want recommendations, career advice or just to chew the fat.

The Law, Politics and Society e-letter is periodically published to keep students abreast of department happenings. If there is something you would like to include in future e-Letters, please e-mail the information to Dr. Pieper at dp5.
