Legal Studies

What is the legal studies Major at the University of Evansville?

In the Department of Law, Politics, and Society at the University of Evansville, you may elect a Bachelor of Science degree in Legal Studies. This major provides you training as a legal assistant. Legal assistants, or paralegals, assist attorneys in the preparation and prosecution of cases. The American Bar Association and many state bar associations have recognized legal assistants as a necessary part of providing quality legal service to the public. The area of work for paralegals is as varied as the areas of practice for attorneys. The Legal Studies program is designed to acquaint students with many areas of law and the processes used in developing cases in those areas..

What would you do with a Legal Studies Degree?

Many of our graduates work for law firms as paralegals. Some have established their own paralegal businesses, working as a paralegal for several different attorneys. Others work in the law departments in corporations, banks or in government agencies such as the social security Administration, the Justice Department or the Internal Revenue Service. Some of our graduates have become instructors in other paralegal programs. Graduate school is a route that many Legal Studies majors choose. Graduates may go to law school or seek an MBA; some go on to more traditional graduate programs in history, literature, or political science. The sound liberal arts education the University of Evansville provides for its students gives them with several options.

Why should I major in Legal Studies at the University of Evansville?

If you are considering the paralegal field, you should look at the University of Evansville closely. Our program is small, so students receive a great deal of individual attention. Many students become paralegals to see if they like working in the field of law before they go to law school or some other graduate school. Our department has an Advisory Board composed of local attorneys and paralegals, so students have the opportunity to become acquainted with professionals locally.

Because the University of Evansville recognizes the global nature of learning, we strive to provide students with international exposure. We provide our students with the unique opportunity to study abroad at our campus in England, Harlaxton College. Legal studies majors are encouraged to study abroad, and the 34 hours of free electives within the program makes a semester at Harlaxton College or abroad easy to arrange. For the last two years students have had the opportunity to apply for Internships with British Parliament while studying in England.

Our program provides students with an internship experience which allows the student to apply what he/she has learned in the classroom. The student also receives college credit for the internships.
