What is International Studies?
International studies majors do more than just read about the world, they explore it. Students have the opportunity to learn about British culture first-hand by spending a semester at Harlaxton College, UE's campus in England. Studying in another country for a year, semester, or summer is the best way to gain fluency in a second language and learn about different culture. We know there is more to learn than a book can teach, so we make the world your classroom.
Study Abroad? Count on it!
To earn a degree in International Studies you will be required to study abroad one semester or hold an international internship; some of our majors do both. We can place you in approximately 350 Universities around the globe for your study/internship abroad experience. Or you may want to take advantage of the University's various Summer Programs in Japan, Mexico, Switzerland or Italy. To help finance an international experience required by the program, students can apply for a one time $500 scholarship to apply toward the cost of studying abroad. This may be used only once but is in addition to other scholarships and grants awarded.
What's in International Studies?
There is more to international studies than travel and class. Many of
our majors are active in Amnesty International and are currently working
to start a Greenpeace International chapter. The International Studies
Program is a member of the Indiana Consortium of International Programs,
and we encourage international studies majors to get involved with the
international students at UE.
We are Competitive
Almost all of our international studies majors qualify for very
competitive departmental academic scholarships, which are based strictly
on merit. Many are in the University Honors Program as well. When you
are in a class of 15 to 20 students studying Japanese, Russian Culture
or the honors section of World Political Thought, we will demand more
from you.
Flexible Curriculum
Once you have satisfied the University
General Education Program requirements, you can put together, within
broad parameters, your own major and select courses from political
science, global business, art history, archaeology, world literature,
foreign languages, anthropology and many others. International Studies
majors also must acquire three years competency in one foreign language
or two years competency in two foreign languages.
Sample Schedule
You Will be Busy. Very Busy!
Competition among good people require it. It pays off, though. Graduates
are prepared for advanced education in international politics,
international business, law, and languages. Upon graduation our
international studies majors have gone on to international and domestic
law programs at institutions such as the University of Michigan, the
University of Indiana, the University of Virginia and Georgetown
University law schools. Graduate degrees in international relations,
foreign policy or international business are also popular options. Those
graduates moving directly into their careers have had great success.
Students may decide to enter programs like the Peace Corps, AmeriCorp or
go abroad to teach English as a second language. Entry level positions
in government, business and public policy are also available.
Professional opportunities are both numerous and diverse for
international studies majors.
Preparation is Key
Before your semester abroad, you will study at the Evansville campus
working though your language preparation, your international studies
curriculum, and your area of concentration, including, but not limited
to, South Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Eastern Europe.
We also offer a concentration in international business for students
whose career aspirations lean in that direction. In addition,
students who are considering teaching English as a foreign language may
choose the English as a Second Language Concentration.
